Advisory Boards

Advisory Boards/Proclamations

Citizens serving on various advisory boards help run the city government by shaping and carrying out policy. A staff member is assigned to each board to assist in conducting business. Each board has a regular meeting day and time (schedules may be altered by holidays). Meetings are open to the public.Members of the public with disabilities who plan to attend a meeting are asked to call the number given prior to the meeting to confirm building accessibility. Schedules and schedule changes are announced in the Washington Daily News and on the local Government Access Channel (Washington's Cable Channel 9).

Brown Library Board of Trustees
Brown Library, (252) 946-4300. Meets third Tuesday of each month, 4:30 p.m., Brown Library, 122 Van Norden Street. Advises on library policies and programming.

Historic Preservation Commission
Planning and Development Department, (252) 975-9383. Meets the first Tuesday of each month, 7 p.m., Council Chambers, Municipal Building, 102 E. Second Street. Decides on Certificate of Appropriateness requests in the Washington Historic District and recommends properties to be designated as part of the Historic District or as local landmarks. Agendas

Human Relations Council
City Manager's Office, (252) 975-9333. Meets the second Tuesday of each month, 6:30 p.m., Council Chambers, Municipal Building, 102 E. Second Street. Encourages and fosters good community relations and provides an effective means of identifying community needs through citizen participation.

Planning Board
Planning and Development Department, (252) 975-9383. Meets the fourth Tuesday of each month, 5:30 p.m , Council Chambers, Municipal Building, 102 E. Second Street. Makes recommendations to the City Council regarding approving subdivision requests, granting rezoning requests, adopting zoning and subdivision text amendments. Addresses long-range planning issues for the City of Washington and Extraterritorial Planning and Zoning Jurisdiction. Agendas

Recreation Advisory Committee.
Parks, Recreation and Civic Center Department, (252) 975-9367. Meets the third Monday of each month, 5:30 p.m., Council Chambers, Municipal Building, 102 E. Second Street. Advises on developing and operating the city's public parks and recreation programs.

Washington Housing Authority Board of Commissioners
Washington Housing Authority, (252) 946-0061. Meets the first Monday of each month, 4 p.m., at the WHA Central Office, 809 Pennsylvania Avenue. Appointed by City Council to oversee operations of public housing facilities in Washington, which are independent of city operations.

Washington Tourism Development Authority
Tourism Department, (252) 948-9415. Meets the third Wednesday of each month, Noon, Washington Civic Center. Oversees use of Occupancy Tax revenue for projects that promote tourism in Washington and directs the work of the Tourism Development Director.

Washington-Warren Airport Advisory Board
Public Works Department, (252)975-9302.  Meets the second Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. at the Washington-Warren Airport Terminal Conference Room.

Waterfront Docks Advisory Committee
Community and Cultural Resources, (252) 975-9383.  Meets the second Wednesday of each month at 3:00 pm. at the Municipal Building in the Mayor's Conference Room.
