Over 81 churches from 33 denominations grace the streets of Washington. In Beaufort County, there are half again as many churches. Worship plays a part in the daily lives of many Washington residents. Many of the community activities are centered around religious life.

Washington hosts an active arts council, a community theater, an area historic foundation, and two libraries. The historic district offers both residents and visitors a chance to stroll past Washington's earliest homes and businesses.

Washington is an outdoor-town. Many of the town's activities take place on the Pamlico River or one of the wide area creeks. The temperate year round weather provides excellent outdoor sporting opportunities. Tennis, yachting, golf, bicycling, and skateboarding are popular pastimes.
