Frequently Asked Questions

The City of Washington receives numerous inquiries about the community through this website. Following are answers to some of the more popular questions.

What is the weather like in Washington?

We get this question a lot from New Englanders in January, February and March. In a nutshell, we usually experience mild winters with little (sometimes none) snowfall and hot, humid summers. For more detailed information, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has a very comprehensive web-based resource of historical climate data from sites across the country – so comprehensive, in fact, that it may be a little overwhelming to find exactly what you are looking for. However, persevere. Data specific to Washington is not available. However, there is information from several other North Carolina locations (listed from east to west): Cape Hatteras, Wilmington, Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte and Asheville. Much of the data you can view at no charge over the internet, or you may purchase publications. Click here to go to the NOAA climate data website.

What is the closest airport to Washington?

The closest major airports are Raleigh-Durham International  in North Carolina and Norfolk International in Virginia. Raleigh is 1 hour and 45 minutes (depending on traffic) west of Washington via US 64 and 264. Norfolk is 2 hours or more (again, depending on traffic) north of Washington (routes vary). Commuter flights may be available from these airports to Pitt-Greenville Airport, 25 miles west of Washington. Washington also has a small airport, Warren Field, for private aviation services.

What is the specific name of the holly trees that you have along the downtown streets?

Foster Holly

In what county is Washington?

Washington is the county seat of Beaufort County, North Carolina. If you are not familiar with Eastern North Carolina, the location of towns can be confusing. For instance the city of Washington is located in Beaufort County, not in neighboring Washington County, where the county seat is Plymouth. And the town of Beaufort is located closer to the beach in Carteret County.

Where do I get a certificate for a birth, marriage or death that took place in Beaufort County?

You will need to call the Beaufort County Register of Deeds at 252-946-2323.

Where do I get a copy of a deed for property in Beaufort County?

You will need to call the Beaufort County Register of Deeds at 252-946-2323.

Is there lodging in your town?

Most definitely. Please visit our Tourism website for a list of accommodations and special visitor packages. Click here to go there now.

I am interested in purchasing property in your area. How can I get information on what's available?

The National Association of REALTORS® offers a website, Realtor.com, that allows you to search for property in any area of the country that participates in this service. The Washington-Beaufort County Board of Realtors participates, and many local real estate agents, companies and properties are listed on this site. We cannot recommend individual real estate agents or companies but we can point your to that resource. Click here to go to the National Association of REALTORS® website. Another option for online research for real estate agents is to conduct a "yellow pages" search on www.google.com. You will get a choice of online directories.  Choose one directory and proceed with your research. This may expand your choice of agents and companies. If you need further advice, call the Washington-Beaufort County Board of Realtors at 252-946-3589, address 110 S. Main St., Bath, NC 27808.
